Aesthetics and functionality as the foundation of harmonious living

The exceptional new building, Dom Oskar in Kamenná Lhota, was named the overall winner of the 10th anniversary edition of the Interior of the Year 2024 awards. It was designed by MgA. Jan Žaloudek. Finalists included, for example, the ČTK Press Center, and among the winners were a combined kindergarten and senior living facility, as well as an interestingly renovated prefabricated apartment building. The results were announced on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the DOX Center for Contemporary Art in Prague.

The awards for the 10th anniversary edition of “Interior of the Year” were designed by the DECHEM studio, founded by the creative and life partners Michaela Tomišková and Jakub Janďourek. Currently, they most enjoy “breathing new life” into shards from failed products and, under the guidance of the BOMMA glassworks, transforming them into original lighting objects. It was during this creative period that they produced the eleven original pieces that the winners took home from the awards ceremony.

The set includes a number of private interiors, as well as the ČTK Press Center, Prague’s Hotel Evropa (W Prague), a number of schools, and a large number of restaurants and shops, as well as interesting offices.

There aren’t many homes that possess genuine charm. Amongst that select few is undoubtedly the First Republic-era villa in Prague’s Hřebenky district, which is currently seeking a new owner. Built in 1912 to a design by architect František Kavalír, and thanks to a recent renovation, it offers not only a strong sense of place but also a very high standard of comfort in keeping with contemporary living standards.

Even as the owners were choosing their new flat in a new-build development in Prague’s Vinohrady district, it was clear that it would require a complete refurbishment, including a change to the layout. Interior designer Iveta Zachariášová therefore transformed the flat beyond recognition, whilst at the same time ensuring it met the exact expectations and high standards of the couple, who have found a new home here.

Designers Michaela Tomišková and Jakub Janďourek (Dechem studio) worked on around ten different versions, of which the winning design consisted of three geometric glass shapes that partially overlap when viewed from the front and, through the interplay of their forms, create a kind of architectural metaphor.

At the end of August, a paradise for all lovers of Scandinavian design opened in the brand-new, modern Smíchov City neighborhood.
